What are Wikis?

Wikis are server software that gives users the opportunity to create and edit Web pages using any server. This means that any user having access to a particular Wiki can add, delete or change information to the Wiki at anytime. Wikis also offer information to large percentage of people within moments!

History of Wikis

  • The first Wiki was created by Ward Cunningham on March 25, 1995 and it was an automated supplement to the Portland Pattern Respository.
  • Cunningham gave this server software the name Wiki after a ride on a Honolulu bus. The bus was called the Wiki Wiki, meaning "quick" in Hawaiian.
  • Below is a photograph of Ward Cunningham

How to access the Wiki for EDU 214E

  1. Click on "Innovations Mini-Teach-ftf-Directions" tab
  2. Click on "Our Wiki" hyperlink under Technology Mini Teach Procedure. The hyperlink is in step #3 of this section.
  3. Follow the steps provided. (We are On-Campus class, section 001)
  4. Go to Rebelmail. Click on link provided in the e-mail sent by Ashley Addis.
  5. Enter the necessary information. (Remember to write down your password, you will need it to log-in to  edit the Wikis)
  6. You now have access to edit the Wikis!

Editing the Wikis

  1. Make sure you are on the "Edit" tab not the "view" tab on the Wiki page
  2. To insert document click on "Images and files" tab, then click Upload files, finally navigate through your files to find the proper document to add to the Wiki.
  3. To upload an image: Find the image you would like to add to your Wiki, copy the URL you would like to use, go to the "Images and files" tab, click "insert image from URL" paste the URL in the line privided, hit enter, finally drag the corners of the image to adjust the size to fit appropriately in the Wiki.
  4. To Insert a Plug-in click on the "Insert Plugin" icon. This icon is located on the far right of the Edit tool bar at the top of the Wiki edit page.
  5. To inster a Hyperlink click on the Insert/Edit Link tab and insert the link you would like to add in the space provided. The "Copy and Paste" function works the best for this task.
  6. Many of the same editing tools that are available Word can be used to make your Wiki more visually appealing. Take time to familiarize yourselves wiht the editing tools available in the Wiki.
  7. Be sure to save work often! The save tab is in the bottom left corner of the page.

Ways Wikis can be used in the classroom

  • Instead of using traditional presentation software make presentations using a Wiki, much like we are doing for this class.
  • Have sudents create study guides to suppliment chapter notes, handouts and homework.
  • Create a glossary of words that have been used throughout the school year. Keep adding to the glossary as the school year progresses
  • Have students post essays in a Wiki then allow other students to post comments about the essay to help the author better his or her paper.
  • Have students create portfolios where they can display and describe work in their Wikis.
  • Create a classroom frequently asked questions (FAQ) page.
  • More ideas can be found at the provided Website.

Kevin and Joana,

Here are a couple of links to directions for embedding a PowerPoint into your page if you're interested.

1. Using Google Docs (http://pbwikimanual.pbwiki.com/EmbedGoogleDocs#Presentations). If you don't already have a Google Docs account, feel free to use the account I set up for the Google Docs sample to upload your PowerPoint.

2. Using Slideshare (http://pbwikimanual.pbwiki.com/How-do-I#embedaPowerPointpresentationonmywiki)

Also, I've done some research to answer your question about inserting a link to your presentation on your page. Your link appeared at the top of the page even though your cursor was at the bottom. I think this happened because you had not assigned text to your ppt. file to tell it where to go. It seems that this is PBwiki's default. This is why it worked when you highlighted "PowerPoint Presentation".

Good question, I'm sure this will help others too! Great job!

Hey guys! Since you're the wiki masters ;) I was wondering how do I re-save my page? When I started, I saved it as just Voice Threads. But I need to re-save it with our last names included. Maybe I'm just missing something simple, but any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
