Definition
Social bookmarking is a method for internet users to store, organize, search and manage bookmarks of web pages with the help of metadata, which is essentailly defined as data about other data. Social Bookmaring websites are basically used to keep track of other websites that people have found useful and a way to find sites that might have never been found without other social bookmarking.
History
The concept of Social Bookmarking dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList, which origianally contained public and provate bookmarks. Over the next three years itList and sites like it began to evolve and compete with one another offering different methods for organizing, sorting, saving, linking and sharing stored bookmarks. It was not until 2003 that the site del.icio.us was founded, intorduced tagging and first coined the term social bookmarking. Finally in 2007 IBM released its own social boomarking website Lotus Connections.
Pros
Social bookmarking can be very helpful for teachers and students because it is used to organize websites in a purposeful lists. This is a great way to share information with other people without being exposed to the useless websites that might be found on search engines.
Social bookmarking is very easy to use and people friendly. The social bookmarking sites give easy step-by-step instructions for adding a button on the toolbar for the site and another button to tag the useful websites. Many of the social bookmarking sites are public and can be shared with other teachers and parents or with people all around the world.
For a teacher these social bookmarking websites can help organize and store websites that can help in their classroom by using a tags. The tags are used to sort the websites in different files. The tags make all the bookmarked websites more findable. The sites that other people have found and taged are disposable to you and other people. People can use the taged sites form any computer because they are on a website.
It's a GREAT way to network!
Cons
Some of the downsides to Social Bookmarking are that the extensive amount of the bookmarked pages can resolve in different or insignifant information. Social bookmaking is done by normal, everyday computer uses; meaning that the information that was bookmarked might not be the information that you might be looking for. There is not a site or any type of way to filter the sites that are socially bookedmarked.
