~Social Bookmarking~

What is Social Bookmarking?

Social Bookmarking is a way for Internet users to share bookmarks of other web pages.  Users save links, or what's called tagging, to web pages that they want to remember or share with others.  The Bookmarks can be private but are usually shared with other users.  People can search them chronologically, category, or via search engine.

History

In 1996 the idea of sharing website bookmarks into a common search engine was created by itList.  At first it wasn't known as "Social bookmarking" but just a website that you could use to tag websites to share with other users.  In the few years following other companies developed something similar. The sites failed due to lack of interest and money.  It was brought back by del.icio.ous and Social Bookmarking wasn't known as "social bookmarking" until 2003 with del.icio.ous. coining the term.  Other companies followed suit and now there are many social bookmarking sites available.

How to Set Up An Account

We are using the delicious site because it's the biggest and most popular site, after looking up delicious.com or clicking on our delicious icon, you need to fill out the basic information about yourself (ex. your name, your choice of a screen name: something appropiate, your e-mail address.) Then you can follow the really easy step by step directions that help you get started on creating your page.

How to use your Account

If you have already set up an account or if you're interested and would like to see an example account with education links you can look at this account:  http://delicious.com/inbox/cellinil

Think of anything you want to teach your students or look up just for fun, type it into the search box and if you like what you see you can tag it. Tagging it turns it into a bookmark which you or anyone else that has a page can see on your site. It's always there and easy to find.   Keep in mind that you need to be specific when searching for certain topics.
