What is Google Earth?

 

 

Google Earth is the key to the world. Students and teachers can visit any area of the world with a click of the mouse. Google Earth, formerly called Earth Viewer and created by Keyhole, Inc., offers students and teachers valuable tools to explore the world. Google Earth provides graphic images of the surface of the globe and search tools to enhance the view of the world. 

 

 

 Google Earth Licenses 

It is available under three different licenses:

Google Earth, a free version with limited functionality;

Google Earth Pro ($400 per year), which is intended for commercial use.

Google Earth Plus (discontinued), which includes additional features.

  

 

History of Google Earth

 

 

 

In 1995 Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Standford. They got full ownership of Keyhole, Inc.  in 2004. Keyhole, Inc. is a company of software development that creates and specializes in geospatial data visualization and was found in 2001. In June of 2005, they released Google Earth.

How do I navigate in Google Earth?

 

Here are some features of Google Earth...

 

  • Navigation - there is a compass on the top righthand corner that allows you to know what direction you are facing

  • Search Bar - on the lefthand side of the screen there is a search bar that enables you to search through: "Fly to," "Businessess," and "Directions"

  • Layers - on the lefthand side of the screen at the bottom the layers application allows you to choose what you want to see on the globe

    • Borders and Labels
    • Geograhic Web

    • My Places - you can save the places that you searched for

    • Sightseeing - Google Earth has a list of famous places that you can explore through a tour
  • Flight Simulator - you can fly two types of airplanes, but a joystick must be hooked up to the computer

  • Measurement Tool - you can discover the distance between two places by going to "Tools" at the top of the screen and clicking on "Ruler"

  • Google Sky - you can switch between viewing Earth and viewing the sky by clicking on the sky button on the toolbar

  • Image Overlay/Path/Polygon/Placemark - these tools can be found on the toolbar

  • Ocean Exploration - you can see what the ocean floor is like through the data collected by experts in marine science; click on the ocean layer under "Layers"

  • Historical Time Lapse/Historical Imagery - you can view a terrain and the historical imagery at different periods in time; the clock on the top bar controls the                                                                      time period

  • Saving Your Tour - you can record each sight you visit on Google Earth by clicking the camera button at the top of the page; you must also click the record                               button that comes up before you begin your tour of the world
